Camplight - Kayan weavers | Sukuta Project

Friday 17th May-Friday 14th June 2024

First displayed at the Light Nelson festival in 2016. These hand-woven cotton banners were made by Mu Bar, the Sukita Project’s weaver, who is a former refugee from Myanmar. She used a traditional back-strap weaving technique that has passed on through many generations.

Involvement in this event brought a sense of shared purpose and belonging to the resettled community and has become a benchmark for using art to assist with cultural integration. A renewed installation will be in situ at Cultural Conversations for the Changing Threads 15th Anniversary Celebration.
