Wasteland by Peter Gibson Smith

Saturday 23rd June–Sunday 12th August 2012

Wasteland is a musing on the cyclical theme of disaster and regeneration by Auckland-based artist, Peter Gibson Smith. The exhibition features a selection of large scale works on paper which are representative of the artist’s practice in the last four years. Using photographic evidence of local disasters as a starting point, the works morph into some sort of alternative speculative history, disconnected from the events that were originally described. Each image is rendered with millions of pencil lines on paper and preserved by layers of beeswax. The works on paper are complemented with a new series; classical-era sculptural busts presented as sunken ruins and symbolic of the inevitable rise and fall of empires.
