Tuesday 5th–Thursday 28th June 2012

Artists get Ripping

Nationally and internationally recognized New Zealand artist Graeme Cornwell has curated an exhibition of 5 young New Zealand artists at the Refinery ArtSpace Gallery in Nelson.

The exhibition: ‘Rip-Off’ includes Auckland-based artists Wendy Grace Allen and Nicol Sanders O’Shea, up and coming Nelson-Tasman Artists: Dean Raybould and Symen Hunter and as well internationally recognized graphic designer and artist Klaasz Bruekel. Accompanying the exhibition is a catalogue which includes writing by award winning Nelson artist Nicholas Haig.

‘Rip-off’ examines strategies that engage in cultural politics. The exhibitors all work with borrowed, stolen, repossessed, or appropriated imagery in a variety of ways such as pastiche and parody for example, making comment through 'irony' and 'double coding' about contemporary New Zealand culture.
