Green Lifestyles is walking tour (~ 3 km) of four organic properties at Ngatimoti, showing how families apply green principles in their housing, gardens and lifestyles. Tour hosts have built houses, gardens, energy, water & waste systems, and businesses that provide healthy lifestyles within a gentle, sustainable footprint.
Lifestyle tourists will see:
Housing – light earth (straw/clay), adobe, wood, (and combinations of these), recycled materials, self-built homes, energy-efficient designs, comfort, beauty
Organic gardens - design, biodynamic and conventional composting, worm farms, mulching, soil improvement techniques, a wide range of magnificent vegetables
Organic orchards – varieties for home consumption and commercial production
Organically managed animals – sheep, beef, poultry
Craft businesses – harakeke (flax) and native plant artist, rock salt lamps, crystal salt products
Woodlots & forestry – eucalyptus, chestnut, oak, robinia, douglas fir, cedar, totara, olive, macrocarpa, lusitanica, beech, blackwood
Energy – solar power and water heating, wood stoves (cooking, heating), food storage cellars
Water - Composting toilets, garden bathroom, sources and use of water
