Your guide to events in Nelson, New Zealand
Friday 8th October 2010
UK-born arthouse blues guitarist Tom Rodwell has been making waves in Auckland and Wellington with his band Storehouse, and now visits the South Island for some shows for the first time since 2004, appearing at Nelson's Boathouse on Friday 8th October and Le Cafe in Picton on Saturday 8th October.
Described by music business bible the NME as “Sheffield’s answer to Lightnin’ Hopkins,” Rodwell actually grew up in New Zealand and has sporadically toured here under the radar since 2003. Metro magazine hailed his “raw, avant-garde improvisations,” while he recently recorded a studio session for Radio New Zealand and has been profiled on Concert FM about his use of the original medium of recorded sound - the Edison-era wax cylinder.
Rodwell and his group perform a funky and improvisatory tour through lesser-known backstreets of blues and roots music, including unconventional re-imaginings of slave songs, prewar spirituals, and even diversions into calypso. Storehouse have played over 600 shows in the UK, Switzerland, USA, Holland and NZ since 2003. In late October, his band will open the Trinity Roots reunion concert at the Auckland Town Hall.
