‘Close Quarters’ is a strong collection of new paintings curated by the artists to explore their musings on the familiar while reflecting a modern penchant to the superficial and absurd.
Candy Clarke paints with acrylic on perspex using bold imagery and strong colours. Using humour and double entendre Clarke presents images and symbols of the domestic scene knowingly parodying twenty first century consumerism, suburban dissatisfaction and the continuous search for self gratification.
Karen Lyttle paints using oil and collage. Her work challenges the viewer with seemingly illogical combinations of domestic animals in domestic environments, highlighting the absurdities of life. These images reflect deeper concerns of our homage to convenience and the subliminal effects of marketing.
In contrast, Liz Palmer paints in oil using abstraction to reveal how our domesticity intrudes on nature with a sublime subtlety enforcing ‘neighbourly’ relationships. Palmer explores how colour triggers memories, experience and emotional responses.
These new works explore ideas and content at close quarters with something to pique the palates of all tastes.
